October is National Library Month in Canada, and it also begins an amazing season of programs and events here at the Whistler Public Library. From local authors to internationally known names and encompassing history, art, adventure, humour, and fiction, there’s something for everyone. All events will take place in the library, either in the Community Room or the Fireplace Lounge.
Next Thursday, October 9, we’ll be celebrating the sesquicentennial of the Crown Colony of BC by hosting Jean Barman, the author of “British Columbia: Spirit of the People.” This large-format volume, beautifully illustrated by archival images and contemporary photographs, celebrates 150 years of our province’s history, beauty and complex culture. The presentation begins at 7:00 pm.
On Sunday, October 19, don’t miss Julie Angus’s slideshow about her experience as the first woman to cross the Atlantic, mainland to mainland, in a rowboat. Her book is entitled “Rowboat in a Hurricane: My Amazing Journey Across a Changing Atlantic Ocean.” Join us at 2:00 pm for this harrowing story.
Next is “Snakebit: Confessions of a Herpetologist,” the autobiography of local Whistlerite Leslie Anthony. Now the editor of Peak Performance magazine, Anthony reveals his first love – the often strange world of reptiles and amphibians. But will he bring specimens?? The event takes place at 7:00 pm on Monday, November 17.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 22 at 7:30 pm – national favourite Bill Richardson will be here in the Fireplace Lounge! His new book, “Old Father William’s Well-Ordered Universe: a Generally Reliable Compendium of Facts, Figures and Formulae, Specifically Intended for the Bathroom-bound (and Those Who Love Them)”….well, the title says it all, I think.
At 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 27, we’ll have Chris Czajkowski and her slide show illustrating the beautiful mountain journal of the year she built a homestead in the Coast Mountains. Original paintings and sketches accompany the diary entries of “A Mountain Year” by this popular CBC Morningside contributor. This event is made possible by the BC Writers in Libraries program.
Finally, on January 17 we’ll host Steven Galloway. His acclaimed novel, “The Cellist of Sarajevo,” was described by the Vancouver Sun as “bursting with life, [a] vivid reminder of the power of art to dispel the darkness.” Get your name on the waiting list for the novel at the library, and don’t miss the chance to hear this 2008 Giller Prize nominee at 7:30 pm in the Fireplace Lounge.
I’d like to thank Nadine White, our intrepid Public Services Librarian, for arranging this incredible lineup for our first year as Whistler’s Living Room. Also, many thanks go to Armchair Books and the various publishers (Douglas & McIntyre, Harper Collins, and Harbour Publishing) for cosponsoring with us to make these events possible and free to the public.
