As we know, summer is officially over and school started this week. Libby McKeever, WPL’s Youth Services Librarian, has plenty of things planned for teens at the library.
Of course, the library is a great place to go when students are doing reports or papers. Did you know that not everything is on the Internet? We have 40,000 actual books here, including reference works and encyclopedias, information books and great fiction for book reports. If you’re at home, we can help you virtually: our website at www.whistlerlibrary.ca has a whole section on Research & Homework Help, with links to excellent websites with verified information. We also are a member of AskAway, the service that connects you with live help from a BC Reference Librarian about any research topic. AskAway hours are Sunday through Thursday 10 am to 10 pm, and Friday & Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. You can also call or email us with reference questions.
We have two book clubs going this year: the Junior Book Club continues on the first Friday of each month from September to May. This club is for young people in grades 5 & 6 and meets after school from 3:30-4:30. The first book is The Ruins of Gorlan, one of the Rangers’ Apprentice books by John Flanagan, and copies will be given out at the first meeting. Club members will also choose the books for the rest of the year from a list compiled by Libby from the Pacific Northwest Library Association’s Young Readers’ Choice Awards. Later meetings will include book discussion and games. The second book club is new, and uses the same format for older kids in grades 7 & 8. This new group will also meet on the first Friday, but from 5:00-6:00; their first book will be Code Orange by Caroline B. Cooney.
Preregistration is required for both clubs: call Libby at 935-8433 or lmckeever@whistlerlibrary.ca or stop by the library to sign up. We are also looking for sponsors to cover the costs of the books and refreshments for these two clubs. If your group or business is interested, please contact Libby.
Another event for teens will take place on Saturday, September 13 at 6:45, with the theme “Your Public Library: What Do You Want?” High school age kids are invited to come for pizza in the Teen Lounge and talk about what they want from the library. Teens helped us design their space, but we don’t want it to end with the construction. To sign up, contact Libby or come to the circulation desk.
Lastly, we have a few open spots for after-school and weekend jobs shelving books for high school students. You must know how to use the Dewey Decimal system and be able to lift and bend for three hours. Please contact Danusia Smit at 935-8433 or dsmit@whistlerlibrary.ca if you’d like to apply.
