Time is passing so quickly – one of my staff reminded me today that December is coming fast, and holiday parties and celebrations will be happening all over. I’d like to remind you all of two special programs that always take place at Whistler Public Library throughout the month of December.
Adopt-A-Book is a brilliant idea for a holiday gift for someone who has it all, or for someone who prefers a gift that contributes to the common good. You can “adopt” an item for the library’s collection by donating a set amount per item; prices are as follows: $15 for a paperback book; $20 for a children’s picture book; $30 for a DVD; $35 for a hardcover novel; $50 for an audiobook on CD OR a nonfiction hardcover book.
The giver will receive a gift card to give or send to the recipient, and a bookplate with the recipient’s name is permanently affixed to the item. The plate reads “This book was donated in the name of ____, December 2009.” This means that the gift keeps on giving for as long as that item remains in our collection.
Our other regular December program is Food for Fines, and this one has proved very popular in past years. Here’s how it works: if you owe library fines or lost book fees, or if you bring back an overdue item during the month of December, you can pay the fines in nonperishable food items. We give a credit of up to $2 per food item, with no limit. If you owe the library $500 in back fines, and you want to bring in 250 cans of soup, that’s ok with us!
At the end of the month, the food all goes to the Whistler Food Bank to help feed Whistler’s needy residents. It’s no secret that the need is greater this year than in the past: according to the Food Bank’s website, they served 762 people between January and October, or 239 more than the entire year of 2008. If you don’t owe the library fines but would like to donate, we’ll gladly accept your food items. We cannot, however, accept monetary donations for the Food Bank.
For me, as with many Americans, the official start to the holiday season is next week on American Thanksgiving. I’ll keep you posted on special programs for all ages as they get closer.
