When the library's closed...

Last week, the library was closed for three days over the Easter Long Weekend. Were you frustrated, needing to do some research during that time? Are you like me, apt to be looking for information late at night, long after the library closes? Are you aware of the universe of good, authoritative resources available online, but not via Google or other free search engines?

Your Whistler Public Library card gives you access to an incredible array of these databases. You can connect to them any time, 24 hours a day, with your library card number, via the internet. Students, researchers, and casual information seekers alike can find what they need here, all searchable with powerful indexes. The list includes:

Academic Search Elite: includes articles from scholarly journals covering all subject areas

Auto Repair Reference Centre: an amazing compendium of instructions for maintaining and repairing domestic and import vehicles

Business Source Premier: business magazines & journals covering marketing, management, economics, finance, accounting, and international business

Canadian Newsstand: major daily Canadian newspapers (Vancouver Sun, Province, and Globe & Mail, etc.)

CBCA - Canadian Business & Current Affairs: Canadian magazines and journals covering politics, business, the arts, and sports

Consumer Health Complete: covers all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to complementary, holistic and integrated medicine

EBSCO Animals: information about the habitats and physical characteristics of animals

Encyclopaedia Britannica: extensive up-to-date information on people, places, and things around the world

Encyclopedia of British Columbia: thousands of articles about BC past and present, plus historical photographs, statistics, charts, maps, diagrams, and audio/video clips

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia: over 25,000 entries covering a variety of subject areas

Global Road Warrior: social, cultural, travel and business information for 175 countries and territories

GreenFILE: information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment

Hospitality & Tourism Index: articles on the hospitality industry and tourism, as well as restaurant and food service management

Library Information Science & Technology Abstracts: articles about librarianship and information management

Library to Go: download and listen to fiction and nonfiction audio books on your computer, PDA or MP3 player. Also includes thousands of E-books, including travel guides

MasterFILE Premier: popular magazines covering a broad range of subjects including business, consumer information, education, health, general science, multi-cultural issues, and more

Novelist: find the perfect book to read with this reader’s advisory guide to fiction. Includes read-alikes, book reviews, and discussion guides

Primary Search: magazine articles suitable for elementary school research

World Book Online: excellent encyclopedia that includes images, maps, time-lines, and audio/video clips
