Summer reading clubs for all ages

Though you might not know it from the weather, summer has indeed begun and the Whistler Public Library has something for everyone. Summer Reading Clubs for all ages are starting soon!

For children going into preschool through grade 3, the SRC is one of the most popular programs offered at the library. The theme this year is “Follow the Reader” and we’ll have stories and crafts programs every Thursday for preschoolers & kindergarteners from 10-11am, and for grades 1 through 3 from 3-4 pm. In addition, two of the Thursdays will be extra special: we’ll have a visit from award winning writer Nan Gregory, author of “How Smudge Came” and “Wild Girl and Swan”, on August 13th. A week later, on the 20th, Edward Lee Fodi will join us. The author and illustrator of “The Box of Whispers, The Door to Unger, and “The Shard from Greeve,” Fodi is well known for his illustrations for “The Chocolatier’s Apprentice.” We also have a new program this year, just for kids going into grades 4-7. They’ll meet twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4-4:30pm to talk about books and write reviews for our website.

All SRC programs are free of charge, but preregistration is required so that we can make sure we have enough supplies. The SRC is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association, Public Library Services Branch of BC, and of course Whistler Public Library. Another great thing about the programs is that they are all on a drop-in basis – you come to the sessions you can and skip the rest with no guilt.

For adults who still like to read the summer away, we have a Summer Reading Club for you too! The ASRC, or Adult Summer Reading Club, starts on July 3rd for library patrons ages 19 and up. We’re asking you to recommend your favourite summer reads for inclusion in our Whistler Summer Picks display. In case you’re shy, be assured that your name won’t be included in the display, but each one enters you into a weekly draw for some great prizes from our sponsors: Marketplace IGA, Opa!, Armchair Books, and the RMOW. As always, there is no registration, no meetings and no cost to you. Just take a moment to share your picks with other book lovers.

If you have any questions about the summer programs, contact Libby McKeever about the SRC at lmckeever@whistlerlibrary.ca or Lindsay Tripp about the ASRC at ltripp@whistlerlibrary.ca. You can also call us at 605-935-8433.
