Whistler Public Library (the institution, not the building) will be 23 years old later this month. From our humble beginnings in the basement of Municipal Hall to our new award-winning digs, it’s been quite a journey.
Celebration Summer Story, a festive afternoon marking the culmination of a Summer of Reading and the beginning of our birthday week, will take place at the library on Thursday, August 20. Lee Edward Födi will host a storytelling/illustrating workshop for kids, and five local children’s authors will also appear. We’ll also have an appearance by those loveable Vancouver 2010 Mascots, Quatchi, Miga & Sumi, and of course there will be birthday cake.
Here’s the schedule:
1:45 – 2:15 Welcome by the Mascots
2:15 – 3:15 Lee Edward Födi workshop
3:15 – 3:45 Birthday cake with the Mascots
3:45 – 5:00 Local authors:
Sara Leach
Rebecca Wood Barrett
Stephen Vogler
Dee Raffo
Sheree Blanch
What a lineup! Libby McKeever, Youth Services Coordinator, has organized the whole event with a little bit of help from VanOC (for the Mascots) and the Library Board of Trustees (for the crucial birthday cake). It should be quite an afternoon, and if it’s nice weather the Mascots will be outside on Library Plaza for photos.
Lee Edward Födi is the author and illustrator of “The Chronicles of Kendra Kandlestar,” as well as illustrator of many award winning children’s books. He will be demonstrating how to tell a story while simultaneously drawing pictures to illustrate the story. Children will be given the opportunity to draw their own pictures illustrating Lee’s story as it progresses. The Workshop is geared to ages 5-12.
Every year, Whistler Public Library seems to gain a little bit more maturity. From its humble beginnings as a Library Association, we grew into a new (temporary) home and became a Municipal Library under the leadership of Joan Richoz. I took over a few years back and we moved into our new permanent home. Now we have two birthdays – we get to have a party for the Library building’s birthday in January as well as the Library institution’s birthday in August. Come help us celebrate!
