Summer is almost over and, for some of us, summer is the time for reading for fun. Here is a rundown of this year’s Summer Reading Clubs at WPL from Libby McKeever (children) and Lindsay Tripp (adults):
It has been a summer full of reading at the Whistler Public Library. The Summer Reading Club, an annual series of children’s programs that run over the summer is supported by the Pacific Library Association and attracts over 85,000 participants in libraries across BC. This year’s theme for children up to grade 3 was Follow the Reader with weekly sessions of stories, songs, games and crafts. We touched on the topic of leaders in our community, in sports, around the world and in the animal kingdom. We were fortunate to have Lindsay Debou, a WPL employee and Paralympic team member, speak to us about her role as a guide to visually impaired ski racer, Viviane Forest. On August 13th we welcomed children’s author and storyteller Nan Gregory for reading and storytelling.
Our Kids Intermediate book club met twice weekly for six weeks with children reading from a selection of 25 titles as well as novels of their own choice. Word and language arts games kept us busy, and participants were encouraged to write reviews of the books they had been reading. Check out their work on our website at /kids/kids-picks-for-kids.aspx
The 2009 Adult Summer Reading Club (ASRC) at Whistler Library looks a little different than it has in past. This year, we have asked patrons and visitors to the library to simply recommend a good summer book to their fellow readers. Come to think of it, with no registration, no meetings, and no fees, to call it a club at all seems a misnomer! ASRC-recommended reads are featured in a Summer Picks display at the library [participant names withheld]. To see a complete list of ASRC Summer Picks, visit our website at www.whistlerlibrary.ca > Books and More > We Recommend.
Thanks to the support of our sponsors Opa! Souvlaki, Marketplace IGA, Armchair Books, and the RMOW, we have given away a myriad of great prizes to ASRC participants. This year’s grand prize is a pack of five adult day-passes to Meadow Park Recreation Centre. For your chance to win, please submit your recommendation in person or by email to ltrippwhistlerlibrary@hotmail.com by noon on Monday August 24 2009.
Thanks for participating, and we’ll be back again next year with Summer Reading Club!
