As I write this, we are at 31 days and counting to the Opening Ceremonies of the XXI Winter Olympic Games. However, even more important in the world of Whistler Public Library is that when you read this (if you read it on Thursday, that is) we will be at 15 days and counting to the last day of library operations until March 8. Library staff are getting lots and lots of questions about this, so I thought it would be worthwhile to go over the details one more time.
As of right now, if you check out a book or an audiobook from the library, the regular three-week loan period falls within the closure; your due date will be March 8. This is the case until January 25-29, when the due date will fall six weeks from the checkout date, or March 8-12. In addition, from January 25-29 the 20-item limit will be suspended and you may check out as many books and audiobooks as you like.
Note that this applies to BOOKS and AUDIOBOOKS only. All other materials must be returned to the library by January 29.
If you check out a magazine or a music CD any time between now and January 28, the due date will be Friday, January 29. If you check out a video on DVD or VHS or a videogame, the loan period will continue to be 7 days until that last week of January 23-28, when all videos and games will be due on Friday, January 29 regardless of when you checked them out. No videos, games, magazines or music CDs will be loaned out on January 29.
This may sound unnecessarily complicated, and indeed it seems complicated even to me as I write this, but there is a method to our madness. When we moved into our new building, we did a similar extended loan program in January of 2007. We found that the items most commonly lost or damaged over the 6 weeks were movies, music and magazines. Somehow, it’s easier to keep track of books, and books are still the public library’s basic stock-in-trade. I hope you will find time to stock up during that last week so you won’t run out of reading material!
If you are hopelessly confused about all the dates and exactly what you can take out, please call us at 604-935-8433. We’ll be happy to answer your questions.
