I want to thank everyone who came to last Saturday’s Olympic Torch Celebration at Whistler Canada Olympic House – we had over 1,000 participants over the three hours! The children’s paper torches and Olympic Passport books kept them busy for quite a while, as did Miga and Quatchi – I keep thinking that kids (and adults!) will be done with the Mascots, but every single time they make an appearance it’s a total mob scene. I absolutely love watching the spectacle. I also loved hearing the stories of the Olympic Flame, the 2010 torch and the Torch Bearers – just seeing all of them gathered in the Fireplace Lounge in their uniforms made me proud.
If you missed it, don’t despair! This Saturday will be the first of three pancake breakfasts, from 9:00 to 11:30 am at Whistler Canada Olympic House (aka Whistler Public Library). The theme this week is First Nations and Sport, and do we have a lineup for you!
The staff of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre will be on hand with drumming demonstrations, a telling of the Raven story, as well as displays of weaving, carving, and bannock making. Kids will be able to make an Olympic passport book (or add to the one they started last week). We’ll have a reading of Bobsleigh Jellybeans by Paul & Talya Shore – a wonderful book about the making of a bobsleigh team, inspired by a true story. Singer/songwriter Tessa Amy will perform, and you’ll be able to have a caricature of yourself as an Olympic athlete made by Mark Siermaczeski of Cruelty Free Cartoons. The face painter will be back for another visit, and we might just see a couple of the Mascots again.
We’ll also have Olympic sports on Wii in the Community Room, as well as tobogganing in the Backyard, so there’s truly something for everyone. It’s open to all, and everything from pancakes to caricatures is free! I am so excited that we have the opportunity to open Whistler Canada Olympic House to the entire community, and I hope you will join us!
