Come to the library this Saturday (Feb. 6)! That’s right, even though Whistler Public Library is closed, you can be among the first to see Whistler Canada Olympic House in the library building. It will be open to the public on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the first in a series of community open houses.
The theme for this week’s event is Celebrate the Torch Relay. We’ll have some of the torchbearers who have carried the Olympic Flame in Whistler and further afield, as well as a real Olympic Torch that will be available for photographs with you, your family and friends. We’ll have Paint the Town Red stickers and temporary tattoos, and you’ll have a chance to see how we’ve transformed the library into a world-class hosting facility.
Kids will be able to create an Olympic Passport book that they can use to collect stamps at various locations, make their own Olympic Torch, and have their faces painted. They can even have a go at competing in speedskating, bobsleigh, and other winter Olympic sports on Wii in the Community Room.
Performers will include local favourite Ali Milner, our own Libby McKeever reading Miga, Quatchi and Sumi: the Story of the Vancouver 2010 Mascots by Michael Murphy, and of course the mascots themselves will appear.
If you’d rather be outside, we’ll have tobogganing and fort building in the “Backyard” behind WCOH — and naturally we’ll have cake. It’s a celebration for the whole family, and it’s just the first of four Saturday events open to everyone. Be sure and mark your calendar for four Saturdays: Feb. 6 from 11 to 2; Feb. 13, 20 and 27 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. (free pancake breakfast each time!); as well as Sunday, Feb. 28 from 5 to 10 p.m. for a big Closing Ceremonies party. I’ll be writing about the specific events coming up in future editions of The Question – each week we’ll have a different theme with performers, crafts and activities.
You’ll be amazed when you see what has happened in the short time since the library closed only a few days ago, so don’t miss it!
