Fall Bear Update with Michael Allen
Independent researcher Michael Allen is back at WPL for his annual Fall Bear Update.
2025 marks the 32nd year of collecting data on bears in the Sea to Sky Corridor. The goal of this monitoring is to maintain a network of remote camera traps that help determine survival (recapture) and fitness (cub production and body condition) of known bears across a rapidly changing (drought, floods, and fires) landscape.
This year experienced continued drought, some small fires, but good berry crops and salmon returns.
Bear fishing strategies, the impact of the chum salmon return in November on the timing of winter denning, and an overview of grizzly bear female fitness in the Upper Squamish River watershed including the lack of males camera-trapped in their spring ranges will be discussed.
This season, we are offering two chances to attend this popular event. Folks can sign up to attend on either Thursday, December 4 OR Tuesday, December 9. Both events will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration opens October 30!
