Whistler Lakes Conservation Foundation (WLCF) is a registered, not-for-profit charitable organization committed to advancing aquatic and environmental education, research and conservation activities. As an advocate and voice for Whistler lakes and watersheds we work collaboratively with BC Lake Stewardship Society, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Resort Municipality of Whistler, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and others to achieve our goals in several areas: monitoring and reporting, preventing the spread of invasive aquatic species, regular liaison with government agencies to address safety, environmental and regulatory issues, and promoting ‘lakefront-friendly’ living and lake stewardship through webinars and workshops. About the speaker:
Norm Zirnhelt is a Registered Professional Biologist with over 35 years experience in water and air quality. Norm was head of the BC Ministry of Environment’s Air/Water Quality Monitoring and Impact Assessment Section for the Cariboo Region from 1989-2010. Norm has been Principal Consultant at his consulting firm, Cariboo Environmental Quality Consulting Ltd. (CEQC) since 2010.
CEQC has completed projects on lake & stream shore protection in sensitive areas, aquatic benthic biology, fish habitat assessment, fish tissue & water chemistry assessment in the mining sector, analysis of aquatic benthic data from a range of sites for the Ministry of Environment. Norm has developed & conducted training courses for impact assessment biologists for the MOE, Ducks Unlimited staff, and Vancouver Island University. Norm currently instructs a course for Vancouver Island University on Water Quality Monitoring and Design, and one on Lake Ecology and Monitoring for the BC Lake Stewardship Society (BCLSS).
Norm has been involved with the BCLSS since it began in 1997 and currently works part time with the society as executive director and lake monitoring specialist.
