This year, Whistler Public Library is celebrating a remarkable milestone: 40 years of serving our community.
For four decades, the library has been a place where people come to learn, connect, discover new ideas, and spend time together. As we celebrate our 40th birthday, we’re also looking ahead and asking an important question: What should the next 40 years of library service look like?
To help answer that question, the Whistler Public Library Board of Trustees is launching our $40-for-40 Campaign, inviting residents, visitors, and library supporters to help invest in the future of one of Whistler’s most valued community spaces.
A Better Library Experience for Everyone
The focus of this year’s campaign is a project that combines beauty, community identity, and functionality.
Funds raised through the $40-for-40 Campaign will support the creation and installation of custom acoustic panels featuring an artistic interpretation of the iconic Spearhead Traverse. These panels will celebrate Whistler’s mountain landscape while helping address one of the most common pieces of feedback we hear from library users: improving acoustics throughout the building.
The library’s soaring ceilings, abundant natural light, and open design help create a welcoming atmosphere, but they can also amplify sound. By improving sound management, we’ll create a calmer and more comfortable environment for reading, studying, working, meeting, and connecting, while maintaining the vibrant energy that makes the library such a popular destination.
“Over the last 40 years, the library has become one of Whistler’s most important gathering places,” says Mikale Fenton, Director of the Whistler Public Library. “As our community grows and the way people use the library continues to evolve, we’re investing in spaces that will better support everyone who walks through our doors.”

The image above shows the Spearhead traverse mapped out across eight acoustic panels, with a rendering of how the panels will look in our space pictured below.

Growing Alongside Our Community
Anyone who visits the library regularly knows how much demand there is for welcoming public spaces in Whistler.
Study tables fill quickly, meeting rooms are frequently booked, and comfortable seating is often in high demand. Families gather for storytimes, students prepare for exams, remote workers seek productive spaces, and many residents simply come to enjoy a quiet moment.
The planned improvements will help ensure that the library continues to meet these evolving needs and remains a place where everyone feels welcome.
Why $40 for 40?
The campaign’s name reflects a suggested donation of $40 in honour of our 40th birthday, but every contribution, regardless of size, will help create a lasting legacy for the community.
Whether you donate $4, $40, $400, or simply help spread the word, your support helps strengthen the library’s ability to serve Whistler for years to come.
One of the Best Ways to Support the Library? Use It.
While donations make projects like this possible, there is another powerful way to support your library: use it.
Get a library card. Borrow books. Download eBooks and audiobooks. Attend programs. Use a study space. Join a workshop. Bring your family to storytime.
Every visit and every interaction helps demonstrate the value of library services in our community.
“People often ask what they can do to support the library,” says Fenton. “The answer is simple: use it. Get a library card. Borrow books. Download eBooks. Attend a program. Spend time here. Every visit, checkout, and program attendance helps demonstrate the value of library services in our community.”
Library usage statistics help tell the story of how the library contributes to literacy, lifelong learning, community connection, and wellbeing. They also play an important role in informing future funding decisions and demonstrating community impact.
As Fenton puts it: “In many ways, using the library is like casting a vote. Every time someone uses a library service, they’re showing that these resources matter and should continue to be supported.”
Celebrate with Limited Edition Birthday Merchandise
As part of our 40th birthday celebrations, we’re also offering commemorative socks and tote bags featuring artwork by local artist Juan Teruel.
These special items provide a fun way to celebrate four decades of community impact while supporting the library’s future. Stop by one of our front desks to purchase merchandise while supplies last!
