On August 27, 1986, Whistler Public Library opened its doors for the first time. We’re celebrating our 40th birthday all through 2026, and one of the ways that you can celebrate with us is to join our reading challenge, 40 Books for 40 Years. We’re challenging you to read 40 books this year – any genre, fiction or non-fiction, and physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks are welcome.
Here’s how to participate:
- Visit app.thestorygraph.com to sign up for a free StoryGraph account if you’d like to use the platform in your web browser. Or, download StoryGraph from the App Store or Play Store and create a free account if you’d prefer to use the app version.
- Once you have an account, click here to find our 40 Books for 40 Years Challenge (you can view the challenge without signing in but you will need a free account to participate!)
- Click the Join Challenge button.
- Start reading! Visit the challenge when you’ve finished a book to log that title.

Looking for an interactive, in-person way to participate in the Reading Challenge? Visit the library and look for the banner above, along the wall near the DVD racks. You can add a sticker to the banner each time you finish a book – what a great excuse to visit the library 40 times this year!
We’ve also announced the first of our Birthday events for the year: our 40 Books for 40 Years Spring Social on Wednesday, May 20! This event will be a chance for challenge participants to meet other readers, discuss the books they’ve chosen, commiserate over how hard (or easy!) it is to read 40 books in a year, enjoy some light refreshments, and get a head start on celebrating the library’s 40th Birthday. This will be a great chance to make new friends and get some excellent book recommendations! Click here for full details.
There will be lots more events to come – make sure you are signed up for our Adult Events Newsletter to learn more as details are announced!

Curious about what the community has been reading so far? Click here for a list of the books logged in January in the Challenge! It’s a great way to find inspiration across genres.
If you’re struggling to kickstart your reading this year, why not try a book that’s 250 pages or less? Picking a shorter book is a reliable way to build momentum in your year of reading.
