Whistler will be celebrating Pride Week from January 21 to 28, 2024, and the library team is excited to take part! This is the 31st annual Pride celebration in Whistler, and we’ll be participating in a number of ways – we hope you’ll join us.
Programs & Events
Our weekly Family Storytimes will be “Rainbow”-themed during Pride, celebrating love and 2SLGBTQIA+ families. Families with young children can join us on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Sunday to get in on the fun.
Our monthly Whistler Rainbow Connection meeting falls during Whistler Pride Week this year! We’ll be celebrating with Ice Skating at Olympic Plaza following our regular meeting on Wednesday, January 24. Join us downstairs at Maury Young Arts Centre for social time from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and we’ll head over to the Plaza after that. Admission and skate rentals are free for participants!
If you’re not familiar, Whistler Rainbow Connection is a monthly social gathering where community members of different sexual & gender identities come together to meet new people, hang out, provide support but most importantly, have fun!
We’re proud to partner with our friends at the Whistler Community Services Society and the Whistler Youth Centre to offer this important program.
Members of our team will also be participating in the Pride Parade on Friday, January 26! This awesome event is part of the Whistler Pride & Ski Festival’s Community Celebration. If you’d like to take part, you can ski or board from Mid-Station to Whistler Village at 2:30 p.m., or join on foot by meeting the crowd in Skier’s Plaza for the Welcome Ceremony at 3 p.m. Either way, make sure you dress colourfully and creatively (and for the weather) to express your pride and allyship at this free public event.
Whistler Pride Week 2024 is also Family Literacy Week! We’re recognizing both occasions on Sunday, January 28, with a Family Literacy Dance Party with Ira Pettle, celebrating all kinds of families.
This program is designed for kids ages six and under with their grown-ups, but all ages are welcome! We’re grateful to the Whistler Pemberton Literacy Partnership for their support of this event.
Pride Reading Lists
Our team has compiled reading lists for adults, teens, and kids that recognize Pride Week by showcasing recent materials written by and celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ authors, perspectives and experiences. You’ll also see book displays of these lists throughout the library if you visit us during Pride Week!
