The Pod: A New Space for Focus & Connection

Looking for somewhere to take a call or join a virtual meeting? Need a quiet spot for focused, distraction-free work outside the home? We’re excited to introduce The Pod, a one-person, semi-soundproof booth designed for work that requires uninterrupted concentration, like meeting a deadline, joining a Zoom call, or studying for exams.

The Pod is equipped with dimmable lights, an adjustable fan, and 120V, USB, and USB-C outlets to keep your devices powered while you work. The soundproofing reduces ambient noise by 30 decibels, meaning that you won’t hear other library users, and if you speak at a reasonable volume, they won’t hear you. The Pod can be booked using your library card just like our small meeting rooms, making it simple to plan ahead and secure a space when you need it most.

Why a Pod? Meeting the Needs of a Changing Community

Libraries are no longer just places to find books—they are dynamic community hubs that adapt to the diverse needs of the people who use them. For some, that means a quiet table for studying; for others, a lively storytime program for their children. Increasingly, people also need flexible, private spaces to connect virtually with colleagues, doctors, educators, or family members.

Focus booths like The Pod help libraries bridge that gap. They give community members a comfortable and affordable place to participate in today’s digital world, whether that’s for remote work, telehealth appointments, job interviews, or connecting with loved ones far away. By offering this kind of space, the library continues to evolve alongside the needs of Whistler’s residents and visitors.

Staff, trustees, & our donor gathered on Monday, September 8 to officially launch The Pod.

Made Possible by Community Generosity

This exciting addition to the library was made possible through a generous donation from a library “super user”, and we are deeply grateful for his support in bringing this innovative new space to our community. His gift ensures that our library remains not only a place to read and learn, but also a place to connect, collaborate, and thrive.

To quote our donor, James Smith: “The Whistler [Public] Library is a key, often unheralded resource for a wide cross-section of the community, and it’s central to my co-working activities as a practicing lawyer. The building is beautiful, and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. It was great to find a fit for complementing the facility with something that benefits my fellow co-workers and regular library users alike – all of whom seem to use the facility as “the” place for disconnecting (from Whistler’s occasional daily grind) and connecting (to their family, work, or other social networks). I was very happy to help in a small way with this terrific mission.”

The Pod is dedicated to our donor’s family.
