Explore our “unusual” items!

If you’re a regular visitor to the library, you may have noticed over the last few years that we’ve been adding some rather…unusual items to our collection. A telescope, bike repair kits, binoculars, ukuleles, and board games have all appeared on our shelves.

In late 2021, our team started working on expanding this “non-traditional” collection, and we’re happy to unveil an incredible list of items that you can now borrow from the library! In addition to the fun things mentioned above, we now have sewing machines, LED light therapy lamps, disc golf sets, robots, and more! Keep reading to learn more about these items, or jump right in and click here to explore the collection.

Crafting

Fiber artists, rejoice! We have some exciting new tools for you to try. Maybe you’ve been thinking about buying a sewing machine, but want to try one out before investing? Borrow our Brother Sewing Machine, which is suitable for all experience levels thanks to some helpful automated features. If knitting is more your thing but you don’t have much time for the activity, you can try a Knitting Machine, which allows you to produce flat or round items in seconds thanks to the ingenious hand crank. A large version is also available for bigger projects with thicker yarn! We even have a Pocket Loom for folks who want to weave on the go or create smaller projects.

Outdoor Fun

If outdoor fun is more your speed, we’ve got you covered. Borrow one of our Disc Golf Sets and explore the awesome disc golf course at Lost Lake. Beginner and expert birders alike can make use of our Spotting Scopes to better view the biodiversity at the Green Lake Spit. Or, have some fun with friends in Florence Petersen Park – right behind the library – with a Croquet Set, Bocce Set, Giant Jenga, or Bean Bag Toss! If you prefer nighttime activities, take advantage of the lack of light pollution in Whistler and do some stargazing with the help of one of our Telescopes.

Science & Tech Toys

If you have a passion for coding, borrow one of our Sphero Bolt app-enabled robots to improve your skills and impress your friends with elaborate obstacle courses. Maybe the long winter days are getting you down? Try out an LED Light Therapy Lamp – they’re proven to sharpen concentration and improve energy levels. Have you always secretly dreamed of DJing? Borrow one of our Specdrums, an amazing app-enabled tool that allows you to create and record custom mixes. If you want to explore the world of what exists beyond the naked eye, try out our Microscope, which is designed with beginners in mind!
